Episode 572 – M3GAN 2.0 / Queen of My Dreams

🎬 Welcome back to Moviewallas – your weekly dose of movie magic, film reviews, and unfiltered banter! 🍿

In this episode, we’re diving deep into two very different films currently making waves:

🤖 “M3GAN 2.0” – The killer AI doll is back and sassier than ever! We debate whether this sequel nailed the satire or spiraled into nonsense. Some of us absolutely loved the campy action-comedy vibes, while others… not so much 👀. Featuring laugh-out-loud moments, wingsuits (!!), and Megan going full action hero – we break down what works, what doesn’t, and why audience reactions are clashing with critics.

👑 “The Queen of My Dreams” – This tender indie gem from writer-director Fawzia Mirza takes us on a heartfelt, time-traveling journey through intergenerational conflict, identity, and memories across Pakistan and Canada. With stunning visuals, beautiful performances, and important representation, this is one debut you don’t want to miss. We give it the thoughtful spotlight it deserves.

PLUS, we share our weekly streaming picks:
🎥 Netflix Shorts: Oscar-winning “The Elephant Whisperers” & moving indie short “Anuja”
📸 Amazon Prime Feature Picks: The soulful “Photograph” and the ever-relevant “Her”

Episode 571 – F1: The Movie / 28 Years Later

🎬🎙️ Welcome back to another episode of Moviewallas – your favorite weekly podcast for film lovers who can’t get enough of theater releases, streaming gems, and all things cinema! 🎬🎙️

In this episode, our trio — Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi — dive into two BIG releases and share their picks for what to watch from home!

🎥 MAIN REVIEWS:

🔥 F1: The Movie — Buckle up as we review one of the most expensive sports films ever made. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and starring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, and Javier Bardem, F1 brings the high-octane thrill of Formula One racing to the big screen. But is it just a giant ad for the sport or a new summer blockbuster classic? Does it work for die-hard F1 fans and newcomers alike?

🧟‍♀️ 28 Years Later — The long-awaited third installment in the “28 Days/Weeks Later” trilogy reunites director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland. With a cast starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, can this horror sequel capture the emotional resonance and genre-defining terror of its predecessors? Or does it stall at the start line?

🍿 WHAT TO STREAM THIS WEEK:
🎩 The Gilded Age – Season 3 is now streaming on Max.
💀 Companion – A mind-bending, genre-flipping thriller available on Hulu & Max.
🌳 The Tree of Life – Revisit Terrence Malick’s ethereal 2011 classic, starring Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain, also streaming on Max.

💬 PLUS: The team talks streaming service struggles, viewer tips (like JustWatch!), and why Brad Pitt might just be too cool to dislike.

Episode 570 – How To Train Your Dragon / Materialists

Moviewallas is on YouTube!

🎬 Welcome to the Moviewallas Podcast!

This week, your hosts Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi are back with fresh takes on a live-action reboot, an indie rom-com with bite, and all the usual film banter you’ve come to expect. 🍿🎧

In this episode, we’re diving into two wildly different films — one a high-flying fantasy remake, the other a sharply observed modern romance:

🐉 HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (2025)

The beloved DreamWorks animated hit gets the live-action treatment. Does it soar or stumble? The team weighs in on the casting, the creature design, and whether Toothless loses a bit of his charm in the translation. With big boots to fill, this adaptation sparked a spirited conversation about nostalgia, fidelity to source material, and how remakes can (or can’t) recapture magic.

💎 MATERIALISTS

The latest from Past Lives director Celine Song, this sharp, stylish romantic dramedy explores love, ambition, and the emotional calculus of modern relationships. Set in New York and steeped in wit and yearning, Materialists prompted a lively debate from the hosts — with Yazdi applauding its depth, Rashmi appreciating its elegance, and Joe raising questions about its emotional accessibility.

📺 STREAMING PICKS

The team also shares a few things to watch from home:

  • The Seed of the Sacred Fig — streaming on Hulu

  • Dabba Cartel — a gritty Hindi-language crime series on Netflix

  • Long Way Round — Ewan McGregor’s global motorcycle journey on Apple TV+

Episode 569 – Tribeca 2025 Coverage (Part 5)

🎬 Moviewallas Ep. 569 – Tribeca 2025 Wrap-Up

📍 Final thoughts, last films, and a heartfelt goodbye from New York

After a whirlwind week of screenings, premieres, and passionate debates, the Moviewallas team—Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi—bring you their final installment of Tribeca 2025 coverage. In this closing episode, they reflect on the festival experience and review four final films that slipped through earlier episodes—each one offering something bold, timely, or just plain unforgettable.

🎞️ Sovereign – Based on true events, this gripping drama follows a father and son who identify as sovereign citizens and find themselves in a deadly standoff with local law enforcement. With powerhouse performances from Nick Offerman, Jacob Tremblay, and Dennis Quaid, this timely and provocative film explores radicalization, authority, and the complexity of belief. (Coming July via Bleecker Street)

🎞️ Empire Skate – A kinetic and heartfelt doc that traces the birth of NYC’s skateboarding scene in the ’90s, the rise of Supreme, and the ways street culture shaped global fashion, art, and identity. A celebration of community, rebellion, and the creativity of kids who carved out their own path.

🎞️ A Tree Fell in the Woods – When a tree crashes into a New Year’s Eve cabin retreat, secrets unravel between two longtime couples. Anchored by performances from Josh Gad, Alexandra Daddario, Ashley Park, and Daveed Diggs, this witty dramedy takes a smart, often hilarious look at long-term friendship, trust, and moral gray zones.

🎞️ Natchez – This probing, richly textured documentary explores the tensions within a Mississippi town wrestling with its antebellum legacy. Told through a tapestry of local voices, Natchez confronts race, memory, and the meaning of historical preservation in modern America.

💬 The Moviewallas also share their festival MVPs, unexpected faves, and thoughts on why film festivals still matter in an age of algorithmic content. Whether you were at Tribeca or followed along from afar, this one’s for the film lovers.

Episode 568 – Tribeca 2025 Coverage (Part 4)

📍 The home stretch—but still plenty of cinematic gems

In our fourth and (almost) final installment of Tribeca 2025 coverage, the Moviewallas trio—Joe, Rashmi, and Yazdi—review a diverse batch of seven films from around the globe. This episode brings emotional highs, auteur visions, and the most gloriously camp zombie rave ever put to screen.

🎞️ Esta Isla (This Island) – A soulful, Spanish-language debut set in coastal Puerto Rico, blending crime, romance, and self-discovery. A tender meditation on escape and reckoning, already picked up for distribution.

🎞️ Twinless – Yazdi’s favorite of the festival. A dazzling, witty, visually inventive story about grief, friendship, and unexpected connections—anchored by brilliant performances from James Sweeney and Dylan O’Brien.

🎞️ Inside – An Australian prison drama exploring cycles of violence, redemption, and institutional failure. Anchored by powerful turns from Guy Pearce and Cosmo Jarvis.

🎞️ The Wolf, The Fox and The Leopard – A heavy, visually stunning, and ambitious dystopian fable from David Verbeek. Over-directed in the best way, it’s a work of vision and cinematic muscle.

🎞️ HoneyJoon – A delicate, Azores-set tale of a mother-daughter vacation that quietly wrestles with grief, revolution, and generational tension. Warm, intimate, and deceptively deep.

🎞️ In Cold Light – A stylish, frantic thriller starring Maika Monroe and Troy Kotsur. Strong performances, but a plot that left us wishing for more clarity and cohesion.

🎞️ Queens of the Dead – A bonkers drag-zombie rave that’s as campy as it is chaotic. The fever dream child of Shaun of the Dead and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Not for everyone… but you’ll know if it’s for you.

✨ Special thanks to the filmmakers, Tribeca staff, and the unsung heroes who make festivals like this magic. We’ll be back with a wrap-up episode soon!
